SUSTIVA is an anti-HIV medication. It is in a category of HIV medicines called non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTIs). Sustiva prevents HIV from entering the nucleus of healthy T-cells. This prevents the cells from producing new virus and decreases the amount of virus in the body.
Sustiva must be used in combination with other drugs to treat HIV. It is usually combined with two nucleoside analogues. |
Medical Directory
Combivir (Lamivudine, Zidovudine)
Combivir is an anti-HIV medication. It is in a category
of HIV medicines called nucleoside reverse transcriptase
inhibitors (NRTIs). Combivir prevents HIV from altering the
genetic material of healthy T-cells. This prevents the cells from
producing new virus and decreases the amount of virus in the
body.
• Combivir is marketed by GlaxoSmithKline. It was approved by the
U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use by people living
with HIV in 1997.
• Combivir is a combination of two drugs: 300mg of Retrovir®
(AZT) and 150mg of Epivir® (3TC). Combivir should be prescribed
by a healthcare provider for patients who need both of these
drugs. Both of these drugs can still be purchased individually
for use in combination with other anti-HIV drugs.
• Combivir must be combined with at least one other anti-HIV
drug, usually a protease inhibitor (PI) or a non-nucleoside
reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI).
Retrovir (Zidovudine)
Doctors use Retrovir to treat adults infected with human
immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Retrovir makes the progress of HIV
slow down. If you want to combine Retrovir with other medications
such as Epivir and Crixivan it can help slow the progression.
Trizivir (Abacavir, Lamivudine, Zidovudine)
Trizivir is a medication prescribed by doctors to fight HIV;
Trizivir combines three drugs that help reduce the deadly virus
that undermines the immune system, leaving the body ever more
vulnerable to infection, and eventually leading to AIDS. The
components of Trizivir are all members of the category of HIV
medications known as nucleoside analogs: Abacavir (also called
Ziagen), Lamivudine (also called Epivir or 3TC) and Zidovudine
(also called Retrovir, AZT, or ZDV).
CIPLA manufactures DUOVIR (Combivir, Lamivudine/Zidovudine).
Uses: The uses of DUOVIR (Combivir, Lamivudine/Zidovudine)
include:
Used alone or with other medications to treat human
immunodeficiency virus
(HIV) infection in patients with or without acquired
immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). It will slow the spread
of HIV infection in the body. Zidovudine/Lamivudine is not a cure
and may not decrease the number of HIV-related illnesses.
The uses of LAMVIR (Epivir, Lamivudine, 3TC, Epivir, Epivir-HBV)
include:
Used in combination with zidovudine (Retrovir, AZT) to treat
human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in patients with
acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). It is also used alone
or in combination with Peginterferon to treat hepatitis B.
Zerit (Stavudine)
Zerit is an anti-HIV medication. It is in a category of HIV
medications called nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs).
Zerit prevents HIV from altering the genetic material of healthy
T-cells. This prevents the cells from producing new virus and
decreases the amount of virus in the body.
• Zerit, manufactured by Bristol-Myers Squibb, was approved by
the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of HIV in
1994.
• Zerit must be used in combination with at least two other
anti-HIV drugs.
