| Tramadol is used to relieve moderate
to moderately severe pain. Tramadol extended-release
tablets are only used by people who are expected to
need medication to relieve pain around-the-clock for
a long time. Tramadol is in a class of medications
called opiate agonists. It works by changing the way
the body senses pain. The maximum recommended dose
is 400 milligrams a day. If you have serious kidney
disease (e.g., if you are on dialysis), the maximum
recommended dose is 100 milligrams every 12 hours.
If you have serious liver disease (e.g., cirrhosis),
the maximum recommended dose is 50 milligrams every
12 hours. If you are older than 75 years, the
maximum recommended dose is 300 milligrams a day.
This medication may cause dependence, especially if
it has been used regularly for an extended time or
if it has been used in high doses. In such cases,
withdrawal reactions (e.g., anxiety, sweating,
sleeplessness, shaking, diarrhea, rapid breathing)
may occur if you suddenly stop this drug. To prevent
withdrawal reactions when stopping extended, regular
treatment with this drug, gradually reduce the
dosage as directed. Also, if you are taking regular
doses of narcotic medications for ongoing pain
(e.g., cancer pain), starting tramadol may cause a
withdrawal reaction. Consult your doctor or
pharmacist for more details, and report any
withdrawal reactions immediately. Tell your doctor
if your pain persists or worsens. |

| Carisoprodol is used for: Treating
discomfort associated with acute, painful
conditions. It is usually used as a supplement
to rest and physical therapy.
Carisoprodol is a muscle relaxer that works
by blocking pain sensations between the nerves
and the brain.
Carisoprodol is used together with rest and
physical therapy to treat injuries and other
painful musculoskeletal conditions. Carisoprodol
is indicated for the relief of discomfort
associated with acute, painful musculoskeletal
conditions in adults. SOMA should only be used
for short periods (up to two or three weeks)
because adequate evidence of effectiveness for
more prolonged use has not been established and
because acute, painful musculoskeletal
conditions are generally of short duration.
Skeletal muscle relaxants are used to relax
certain muscles in your body and relieve the
stiffness, pain, and discomfort caused by
strains, sprains, or other injury to your
muscles. However, these medicines do not take
the place of rest, exercise or physical therapy,
or other treatment that your doctor may
recommend for your medical problem.
Methocarbamol also has been used to relieve some
of the muscle problems caused by tetanus.
Skeletal muscle relaxants act in the central
nervous system (CNS) to produce their muscle
relaxant effects. Their actions in the CNS may
also produce some of their side effects.
For oral dosage form (tablets): For relaxing
stiff, sore muscles: Adults and teenagers—350
milligrams (mg) four times a day. Children up to
5 years of age—Dose must be determined by your
doctor. Children 5 to 12 years of age—6.25 mg
per kilogram (2.5 mg per pound) of body weight
four times a day. |
